Sand Tray Therapy

When words fall short,
the sand speaks.

At Blue Star Counseling, Kathryn offers sand tray therapy as a powerful, expressive therapy tool—especially for teens, older children, and adults who may struggle to put their thoughts or emotions into words.

Using figurines, symbols, and a tray filled with sand, clients create scenes that reflect their inner world. These images help clients identify themes that are otherwise difficult to articulate, providing a safe and creative outlet for emotional processing.

What Is Sand Tray Therapy?

Sand tray therapy is a form of expressive therapy where clients use miniature figures and symbols to build scenes in a tray of sand. These scenes become a reflection of the client’s internal experience—offering insight into emotions, past trauma, self-perception, and relational dynamics.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, sand tray allows clients to explore and communicate without the pressure of verbal expression. The process is both grounding and symbolic, often leading to powerful shifts in understanding and healing.

Why Teens Benefit from Sand Tray Therapy

Teenagers are often stuck between the complexity of their emotions and the limits of language. Sand tray offers teens a non-judgmental, nonverbal space.

Sand tray therapy is especially helpful for teens who are withdrawn, guarded, or overwhelmed by traditional talk therapy. It can feel like an artistic process—giving form to what’s hard to say.

How We Use Sand Tray Therapy

Sand tray can be integrated into Child & Family Play Therapy, teen counseling, or individual sessions for older children and adults.

For some older children or teens, it’s one of many interventions we use in a nondirective, activity-based approach that might also include creative play, movement, or walk and talk therapy. For others, it’s the main modality—used consistently to explore deeper emotional patterns over time.

What a Session Might Look Like

In a sand tray session, clients will:

  1. Select figures that resonate with how they feel or what they’re experiencing
  2. Place the figures in the tray of sand to create a scene
  3. Choose whether or not to talk about the scene (it’s always their choice)
  4. Reflect and process with the therapist if/when ready

This approach gives clients control, freedom, and safety, all of which are essential to authentic healing.

Is Sand Tray Therapy Right for Your Teen?

If your child has difficulty expressing emotions—or avoids traditional talk therapy—sand tray may offer a more accessible path to growth. It’s not just for little kids; it’s a respected, effective therapy for teens and even adults navigating trauma, identity, and big emotions.
