BrainspottingTherapy

Where you look affects how you feel—and how you heal.

At Blue Star Counseling, Kathryn offers brainspotting therapy as a gentle, body-based approach to processing trauma, anxiety, overwhelm, and emotional distress.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, brainspotting bypasses the thinking brain and accesses the deeper emotional centers where trauma and stress are stored. It’s especially effective for clients—children, teens, or adults—who’ve tried other therapies and still feel stuck.

What Is Brainspotting Therapy?

Brainspotting is a neurobiological therapy that helps people access and release unresolved emotional pain by identifying a “brainspot”—a specific eye position connected to a deeply held emotional experience.

Developed by Dr. David Grand, brainspotting is rooted in the idea that where you look affects how you feel. When we identify a visual focal point linked to distress and hold that focus while staying attuned to the body’s response, the brain begins to reprocess and integrate the stored material.

How Does Brainspotting Work?

In a brainspotting session, the client works with a trained therapist to identify a brainspot using eye position, somatic cues, or felt sense. Then, while maintaining gentle focus on that spot, the therapist provides supportive attunement as the client processes what arises.

It’s not about analyzing or explaining—it’s about tuning in, staying present, and allowing the body and brain to do the work they were built to do.

This process often feels calming, grounding, and surprisingly organic, especially for clients who struggle with verbal processing.

Brainspotting for Teens and Children

For kids and teens who are sensitive, overwhelmed, or have difficulty talking about experiences that are emotioinally distressing, brainspotting can offer a quiet and non-intrusive way to release stress and trauma.

The pace and structure of each session are adapted to meet the developmental needs of each child or teen. Children often use art to draw representations of their experiences to use during brainspotting.

Brainspotting can augment other therapy modalities and might be helpful for:

Brainspotting for Adults

Sometimes adults have tried other therapies—talking through the same stories, trying to “think” their way out of distress—and still feel stuck.

Brainspotting offers a different path.

By working from the body up (not just the brain down), brainspotting can help.  You don’t have to explain everything to heal. You just have to feel safe enough to stay with what comes up.

What to Expect

Brainspotting sessions are 50–60 minutes and typically take place in a quiet, low-stimulation office setting. Some clients prefer to talk during the session; others process more internally. Both are valid. Similarly, clients may benefit from brainspotting for the entire session, or we may use brainspotting for only a portion of the session. Each session is tailored to what the client needs, with the client always remaining in control of how the process proceeds.

Sessions may be part of a broader treatment plan or offered as a focused short-term intervention.
