Attachement Therapy
Building safety, trust, and connection from the inside out.
If you’ve ever wondered why your child pushes you away when you try to get close—or seems unphased by consequences or praise—attachment therapy can help. At Blue Star Counseling, Kathryn specializes in working with children and families healing from attachment trauma, early separation, or inconsistent caregiving.
Kathryn offers relational, trauma-informed therapy grounded in trust, safety, and co-regulation. Using models like Theraplay®, she helps families strengthen the emotional bonds that make healing possible.
What Is Attachment Therapy?
Attachment therapy is a specialized form of counseling that focuses on repairing and strengthening the relationship between a child and their caregiver.
Informed by decades of research in neurobiology and child development, attachment therapy helps children feel safe enough to let their guard down—and helps parents better understand what’s driving difficult behaviors.
Struggle to trust or connect with caregivers
Show controlling, withdrawn, or aggressive behaviors
Have a history of foster care, adoption, or early separation
Have experienced birth trauma, medical procedures or stress within the family system during infancy or early childhood
Neglect or abuse
Separation from a primary caregiver
Frequent changes in caregivers
Early medical trauma or hospitalization
What Is Attachment Trauma?
Attachment trauma occurs when a child’s early experiences disrupt their sense of safety and security in relationships.
When a child doesn’t experience consistent, attuned care, they may develop behaviors rooted in survival—not connection. This can occur for various reasons, and even in situations in which the parent is doing everything in their power to meet their child’s needs. Children with attachment trauma aren’t “bad kids.” They are kids doing their best with nervous systems wired for protection.
With the right attachment trauma treatment, healing is absolutely possible.
My Approach to Attachment Therapy
Kathryn combines attachment theory, Theraplay®, and other relational modalities to help families reconnect. Sessions typically include both the child and caregiver and focus on:
- Co-regulation and emotional safety
- Increasing felt safety in the parent-child relationship
- Reducing defensive or shut-down behaviors
- Helping parents respond with connection, not fear or frustration
This is not a quick fix—but with consistency, many families see profound transformation.
